Kenya and Uganda - 2011
Below is the report from Dick Clark, the optical team leader, of the results of the optical trip utilizing equipment provided by Kendall Optometry Ministry, Inc.
=======================================================
Kenya and Uganda, East Africa
On our recent 10 day visit we visited Nairobi, Kenya and then 10 days in Jinja, Uganda with Kelly Green Ministries. We held a large clinic in the NW portion of Nairobi (Kembo) where we “read” over 400 pairs of eyes using a the Laser Refractor and prescribed the appropriate RX glasses. Additionally we gave out over 1500 pairs of Sunglasses and 1700 pair of readers. The Pastor of the 3,000+ member church said that the optical clinic war the “greatest thing he had ever seen in Africa”. Our biggest problem was crowd control! Royetta was outside with the “crowds” and felt unsafe part of the time
In Uganda we held clinics on the banks of the Nile River. We were less than 25 yards from the water.
There were 2 doctors and 2 dentists working also. Others were teaching Aids Awareness and Pastor Conferences (Doctrinal training i.e. salvation, giving etc.). Helping so many people is heartwarming. However, not being able to
Royetta with interpreter “Paris”. She wants to visit us here in the USA
help others wrenches your heart because we didn’t have the right RX glasses or equipment.
We left Nairobi and drove (17 Hrs.) in a church bus up in the mountains along the riff valley of Kenya. The view was unsurpassed. We arrived in Jinja late at night and the clinics were held on the Nile but 1st we had to measure out food for distribution to women in some surrounding villages. A Weeks supply of food-rice, beans, corn flour, and laundry soap (bars). We also attended graduation for these women from a yearlong sewing class where they were “Awarded” their own treadle sewing machine. This so they could earn money in the future.
We had 4 days of clinics and one evening for the hotel employees. Because of the fenced area we didn’t have the crowd control issues but people started lining up at 6am and the clinic didn’t start till 9am. Similar #’s of glasses as Kenya were given out.
While at this clinic a mother left us a present…Her little Boy. He was 14 months old and was severely malnourished weighing just 14 lbs. The Dr. with us didn’t think he would make it. However the women with us said HE WILL LIVE, because of being on the banks of the Nile River and his name was… wait for it…Moses. We thank god that he did make it and is in a nursing home run by a woman from Virginia. (See “servinghischildren.org”)
A very rewarding and blessed Trip. They want us again next year. + 4 others.
