Greece, 2023
A nine-person team from Gardendale, Alabama had the privilege of traveling to three sites in Athens
Greece to conduct vision clinics for refugees from the Ukraine, from several Middle Eastern
countries as well as African countries. We met people from at least ten different countries, and
experienced more than ten languages and dialects. Due to the different cultures involved, we held
the clinics in three locations — two days serving Ukrainians, one day each with African refugees and
Middle Eastern refugees. Over the four days of clinic, we saw over 250 clients and gave out over 200
pairs of glasses.
Our prayer is that these displaced people felt the love of God as we welcomed them and fitted them
with eyeglasses. We heard heart-breaking stories of loss, fear, and feelings of being alone, forgotten,
and unwanted in a foreign country. It was humbling for our team to experience their joy and gratitude
in receiving a pair of glasses.
One friend had a blind eye and just asked us to try to improve her good eye. We tested her twice,
once testing both eyes and the second testing only the good eye. After trying 6-7 pairs of glasses,
we found a pair of glasses that allowed her vision in her “blind” eye!! We praise God for His
provision! The sweet lady was overjoyed to be able to see!
Many of the clients had glasses in the past but either they were left behind in the rush to leave, or
they were broken in the travels. Most of the clients who came to us with glasses needed their
prescription updated. Not only were we able to meet that need, but we were able to show them in a
practical way that people from across the world cared for them. They were not alone; strangers
cared. They heard the story of the love of God, and they were re-introduced to hope.
The eyes are the window to the soul. What an honor to look into these eyes and pray for God to
minister to their brokenness, asking Him to bring healing both physically and spiritually. One team
member shares, “Using the auto-refractor, I was given the opportunity to physically look deep into
the eyes of people from so many different nations, tribes, and languages-- and to pray in my heart
for each one's soul.”
After being fitted with glasses, their demeanor changed. They were so proud of their glasses. Our
4th station was the evangelism station. The people were very interested in hearing about the love of
God, and why Americans came across the ocean to bring them glasses. When the clients entered
the clinic they were quiet and reserved. After going through the four stations, we were family! The
transformations that took place were not only better vision; hearts were united in love. I believe we
will see these sweet faces again one day as we join together around the throne singing a new song.
“Blessing and honor and glory and power be to the one seated on the throne, and to the Lamb,
forever and ever!”
